Rome, March 21 (LaPresse) – A joint appeal has been made to US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to avoid a tariff war that would primarily affect farmers, consumers, and rural economies in both Europe and the United States. This initiative comes from Coldiretti, Filiera Italia, and the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), who have sent a letter to the political leaders of the US and the European Union, urgently calling for an end to the escalating trade conflict that is directly and heavily impacting the agricultural sector, threatening market stability, food security, and economic sustainability. The two main agricultural organizations, representing millions of farmers on both sides of the Atlantic, are urging an immediate change of course regarding a situation that is exacerbating economic instability, raising production costs, disrupting supply chains, and reducing market access. "Retaliatory measures," the letter reads, "directly affect farmers, who are paying the price for geopolitical decisions that undermine the resilience of the global food system. Coldiretti and the NFU denounce that the current climate of conflict risks compromising the strategic role of agriculture for food security, environmental protection, and social stability," they continue. "The two organizations are calling on their respective governments to take responsibility, urging them to immediately stop this harmful cycle of tariffs and counter-tariffs and to open transparent and constructive dialogue. There is a call for greater fairness in international trade rules, with concrete support systems for farmers and a fair distribution of value along supply chains," the farmers add. "But above all, as a concrete gesture of de-escalation, a reciprocal reduction of trade barriers in key agricultural sectors is proposed to lay the foundations for a new negotiation."
