Milan, 23 April (LaPresse) – World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab is under investigation by the organisation he created, after a new letter of complaint reported alleged financial and ethical misconduct by the long-time leader and his wife. The Wall Street Journal reports that the anonymous letter was sent last week to the Forum's board of directors and raised concerns about the Forum's governance and corporate culture, including allegations that the Schwab family had mixed personal affairs with the Forum's resources without adequate oversight, according to the letter and people familiar with the matter. The letter included allegations that Klaus Schwab asked junior employees to withdraw thousands of dollars from ATMs on his behalf and used Forum funds to pay for private in-room massages at hotels. It also alleges that his wife Hilde, a former Forum employee, scheduled ‘symbolic’ meetings funded by the Forum to justify luxury travel at the organisation's expense. Klaus Schwab recently disputed the investigation, telling board members that he denied the allegations and would contest them in court, according to sources at the WSJ. The board decided to open an investigation during an emergency meeting on Easter Sunday. Schwab decided to step down immediately as chairman, rather than remain in office for an extended transition period as previously planned.
