Milan, June 12 (LaPresse) – The number of employed persons increased by 141,000 units (+0.6%) compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, due to the rise in permanent employees (+143,000, +0.9%) and self-employed workers (+18,000, +0.3%), which more than offset the decrease in temporary employees (-20,000, -0.8%). The number of unemployed also rose (+16,000, +1.0% over three months), while the number of inactive individuals aged 15–64 declined (-157,000, -1.3%).
This trend is reflected in the increase in the employment rate, which rose to 62.7% (+0.4 percentage points in three months), the stability of the unemployment rate, unchanged at 6.1%, and the decline in the inactivity rate, which fell to 33.1% (-0.4 points).
In the provisional data for April 2025, compared to the previous month, the stability in the number of employed persons and in the corresponding rate is associated with a decrease in the unemployment rate (-0.2 points) and a slight increase in the inactivity rate for people aged 15–64 (+0.1 points).
This was reported by ISTAT in its data on the labour market for the first quarter of 2025.
On a year-over-year basis, the number of employed persons continues to grow (+432,000, +1.8% in one year), driven by the increase in permanent employees (+4.0%), which contrasts with the decline in temporary employees (-6.7%) and self-employed workers (-0.4%).
