Milan, Jan. 2 (LaPresse) – Record tax refunds in 2025. The amounts recognized this year by the Revenue Agency for families and businesses total almost 26.3 billion euros, with an increase of more than 2 billion compared to 2024, when refunded sums stood at 24.2 billion (+8.5%). This is the best result ever. The number of payments is also up, exceeding 4.1 million, marking growth of more than 5% compared to last year (3.9 million payments).
Refunds to families and businesses increase – Of the total 26.3 billion euros in tax refunds paid in 2025 (data as of 24.12.25), almost 5.3 billion concern direct tax refunds: about 3.5 billion in IRPEF returned to families and 1.8 billion in IRES refunded to businesses. More in detail, of the 3.5 billion euros credited to individuals, 1.8 billion were paid (by bank transfer or check) directly by the Revenue Agency to nearly 2.4 million citizens who filed the 730 tax return by the end of September without indicating an employer to receive the credit in their paycheck. VAT taxpayers (businesses, artisans and professionals) were instead granted refunds of Value Added Tax for more than 20.8 billion euros. Also returned to the community were 169 million euros relating to other taxes (registration tax, government concessions, direct taxes deriving from IRAP deductibility).
Positive trend also for the number of payments – If, instead of amounts, the number of payments made is considered, more than 4.1 million refund requests were successfully processed by the Agency this year: IRPEF refunds were just under 4 million (about 96% of the total) and VAT refunds numbered 102,000. Finally, in the order of a few tens of thousands (44,000 in total) were IRES refunds and those relating to other taxes managed by the Agency.
