Frankfurt (Germany), 21 January (LaPresse) – ‘The US is behaving very strangely for allies,’ said ECB President Christine Lagarde during an interview with broadcaster RTL. Responding to a question about relations with Washington, Lagarde noted that threats over tariffs and territories such as Greenland are not consistent with the behaviour of a historic ally within NATO. We are witnessing the dawn of a new international order. When you have been allies within the North Atlantic Treaty for decades, threatening to take over a territory that is clearly not for sale, such as Greenland, and waving tariff restrictions is not very “allied” behaviour, in quotation marks," Lagarde said. According to the ECB president, US President Donald Trump's statements on tariffs and strategic territories are calling global balances into question. ‘This new international order must lead us to a profound review of the way we organise our economy in Europe and our relations with countries that play by our own rules,’ she added, stressing the importance of the positions taken by French President Emmanuel Macron and the Canadian Prime Minister.
