Milan, 5 February (LaPresse/AP) – The Washington Post has laid off a third of its staff, including about 300 journalists, eliminating the sports section, several foreign newsrooms and the book section. The large-scale cut announced on Wednesday is a blow to journalism and one of its most legendary brands. The newspaper has been owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos since 2013. The Post's executive editor, Matt Murray, called the decision painful but necessary to strengthen the paper and withstand technological changes and user habits. He outlined the changes in an online company meeting. Staff members then began receiving emails with two subjects, informing them whether or not their role was being eliminated. Rumours of layoffs had been circulating for weeks. The newspaper lost subscribers in part because of decisions made by Bezos, including withdrawing support for Democrat Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election against Donald Trump and taking a more conservative stance.
