Bank of Italy: number of digital payments set to rise to 16 billion by 2025, with growth in instant bank transfers

Milan, 19 May (LaPresse) – Around 16 billion transactions were carried out in 2025 using alternative payment methods to cash. Digital transactions are on the rise: in fact, there were around 6 billion digital transactions in 2018. These are some of the figures revealed by the Bank of Italy’s new statistical platform. There has also been a shift in behaviour due to the effects of the pandemic. Instant bank transfers are also on the rise, increasing from around 15 million in the fourth quarter of 2022 to around 100 million out of a total of approximately 347 million transfers in the fourth quarter of 2025.
