Rome, 9 January (LaPresse) – ‘What do the film's protagonist, President De Santis, and President Mattarella have in common? The character of Mariano De Santis is not inspired by Mattarella, partly because, to be precise, Scalfaro also had a daughter,’ replied Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino at a press conference at Fremantle's Rome headquarters to present his new film ‘La grazia’ (The Grace). The film stars Toni Servillo as Mariano De Santis, President of the Republic grappling with an institutional and human dilemma about the end of life. ‘A Catholic upbringing is a constant feature of many Presidents of the Republic,’ Sorrentino continues. ‘We were not inspired by Mattarella, but obviously here and there we referred to numerous Presidents of the Republic for the essential coordinates. Then the character took on a life of his own, independent of any real reference.’
