Rome, June 19 (LaPresse) – “With the beginning of summer and the resulting temperature rise, tropospheric ozone has increased significantly in Europe in June,” reports the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). The agency highlights that “tropospheric ozone is a pollutant with harmful effects on human health and ecosystems,” and that “these particular episodes have occurred earlier than usual.” Forecasts for Europe had already indicated “a rise in tropospheric ozone concentrations across the Mediterranean basin starting from June 9, with significantly higher levels in almost all European countries, except for those in the Scandinavian Peninsula.” While high ozone concentrations during the European summer “are not uncommon,” CAMS notes that “episodes of this intensity so early in the season are unusual.”
