New Legambiente report: ‘Coastline violated by 28 crimes a day’

Rome, 20 June (LaPresse) – "Illegal construction, illegal quarries, unlawful occupation of maritime state property and irregularities in public procurement. Italy's coastline is increasingly being violated by illegal construction." This is the latest warning from Legambiente, which – on the occasion of the official launch of its historic campaigns Goletta Verde 2025 and Goletta dei Laghi 2025 scheduled for 23 June – has published a preview of the data from its report “Mare Monstrum 2025”. Looking at the figures, Legambiente notes that in 2024, there were 10,332 offences (+0.7% on 2023) in Italy's coastal regions. This is an average of about 28 crimes per day, or 1.2 per hour, resulting from 534,008 checks (+6% compared to 2023) carried out by the police and port authorities. However, while reports (10,982, -5.7%), arrests (8 people, -42.9%) and seizures (1,041, -35.5%) are down, administrative offences (27,960, +85.6% compared to 2023) are on the rise. At the same time, the effectiveness of sanctions is increasing: 28,030, with an economic value exceeding €53 million, up 46.2% compared to 2023. Overall, between crimes and administrative offences, more than 38,000 infringements were detected in 2024 (25,319 in 2023). Campania tops the list of violations with 1,840 offences (17.8% of the national total), followed by Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany and Calabria.
