Naples, Feb 11 (LaPresse) – Italy ranks 52nd in the world and 19th among the 27 European Union countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). "Despite a general upward trend, with a +14 point increase since 2012, the 2024 CPI marks Italy’s first decline (-2)," Transparency International noted. Over the past 13 years, Transparency highlights, "the national system has triggered positive changes in anti-corruption efforts. This progress is also the result of anti-corruption measures adopted in the last decade, including regulations on whistleblowing and public procurement. Additionally, the role of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC) has been strengthened in recent years, improving procurement regulations and creating a public database that represents a regional example of renewed confidence in transparency systems." However, "recent reforms and unresolved issues are weakening progress in combating corruption. Some ongoing concerns continue to negatively impact the effectiveness of the public sector’s anti-corruption system, including the lack of regulations on conflicts of interest between public and private sectors, and the absence of legislation on lobbying." Regarding anti-money laundering efforts, Italy "was among the last countries to implement the Register of Beneficial Owners, only to later postpone its enforcement, potentially undermining the effectiveness of anti-money laundering measures. Furthermore, Italy has failed to support the European Anti-Corruption Directive, with the EU Policy Commission of the Chamber of Deputies issuing a negative opinion on the proposal in July 2023."
