Trento, 17 Mar (LaPresse) – One dead and two injured, all of German nationality, were killed in the avalanche of considerable size that broke off from the Presena glacier in Trentino on the Tonale this morning at around 11am. Clean-up operations by the Trentino Alpine Rescue are still in progress. The alarm at the single emergency number was raised around 11 a.m. by a fourth companion, the only uninjured member of the group. The single emergency number immediately requested the intervention of two helicopters. The canine unit on the first aircraft immediately began the search for the still-buried ski mountaineer. In the meantime, the helicopter technician and the medical team of the other helicopter landed on the scene and extracted the two ski mountaineers half-buried in the snow, gave them the first treatment and helicopter transported the first one to Trento's Santa Chiara hospital and the second one to Rovereto's Santa Maria del Carmine hospital. The intervention was assisted by rescuers from the stations of Vermiglio, Pejo, Val di Sole, Alta Val di Non, Campiglio, Rabbi and Val di Non of the Alpine Rescue Service, who were transported up to altitude thanks to the support of a third helicopter. The ski mountaineer who was initially missing was pulled out of the snow in cardiac arrest and lost his life during resuscitation operations. Having received the authorities' authorisation for the removal of the body, the man's body was helicoptered to an airfield in Vermiglio, while rescue personnel and two canine units remained on site to continue clearing the area.
