Garlasco murder case, Giardina excluded from DNA expert report for interview on Le Iene

Milan, 15 Apr. (LaPresse) – The investigating judge of Pavia, Daniela Garlaschelli, has accepted the ‘motion to recuse’ Professor Emiliano Giardina as an expert witness in the case of the Garlasco crime and the murder of Chiara Poggi, in relation to the male DNA evidence in the investigation, as requested by the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office. For the judge in charge of preliminary investigations, the interview given years ago to the TV programme Le Iene on the same ‘subject’ of the consultation (the genetic trace on the nails of the 26-year-old woman killed on 13 August 2007) could ‘compromise the appearance of impartiality’ of the super expert who deciphered ‘Unknown 1’ in the case of Yara Gambirasio. In the order, which accepts the request of the public prosecutor Valentina De Stefano with the addition of Stefano Civardi, the judge ‘has no doubts about the absolute correctness demonstrated and the impartiality’ of Professor Giardina who was ‘chosen for his undisputed professional abilities, scientific preparation and recognised authority’. With the ordinance notified today, the new experts have been appointed. They are Dr Denise Albani as geneticist and Domenico Marchigiani as fingerprint expert. The hearing for the conferral of the assignment has been set for 16 May at 11 a.m. in the Court of Pavia.
