Saman case: two cousins arrested after appellate conviction

Reggio Emilia, May 8 (LaPresse) – Saman Abbas’s cousins, Nomanulhaq Nomanulhaq and Ijaz Ikram, were arrested this morning by the investigative unit of the Reggio Emilia provincial Carabinieri command and taken to the city’s prison at the disposal of the judicial authorities. The arrests follow the ruling issued by the Bologna Court of Appeal on April 18. On that date, four family members of the 18-year-old of Pakistani origin—murdered in 2021 after refusing an arranged marriage—were sentenced to life in prison in the second instance. In addition to confirming life sentences for her parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, and increasing her uncle Danish Hasnain’s sentence from 14 to 22 years, the court also handed life sentences to the two cousins, who until now had remained free. The Bologna public prosecutor's office requested pre-trial detention given the severity of the charges and sentences. On May 6, the Court of Appeal granted the request, issuing arrest warrants that were carried out this morning.
