Pope Leo XIV: ‘Ready to make every effort for peace’

Vatican City (Vatican), 14 May (LaPresse) – ’The peace of Christ is not the silence of the grave after conflict, it is not the result of oppression, but a gift that looks to people and reactivates their lives. Let us pray for this peace, which is reconciliation, forgiveness, and the courage to turn the page and start again. I will make every effort to ensure that this peace spreads.’ Thus spoke Pope Leo XIV as he received in audience the participants in the Jubilee of the Eastern Churches. ‘The Church will never tire of repeating: let the weapons be silenced,’ added the Pontiff, who concluded: ‘The Holy See is available so that enemies may meet and look each other in the eye, so that peoples may be given back hope and the dignity they deserve, the dignity of peace. The peoples want peace, and I, with my heart in my hand, say to those responsible for the peoples: let us meet, let us dialogue, let us negotiate! War is never inevitable, weapons can and must be silenced, because they do not solve problems but increase them; because those who sow peace will go down in history, not those who reap victims; because others are not primarily enemies, but human beings: not evil people to be hated, but people with whom to talk. Let us reject the Manichean visions typical of violent narratives, which divide the world into good and evil.
