Milan, May 25 (LaPresse) – Martino, 55 years old, suffered a severe work-related accident that caused his liver to rupture. He was rushed to the hospital in Cuneo and underwent four surgical procedures before the critical turning point: a liver transplant under the "national super-emergency" protocol.
He was transferred to the Molinette Hospital in Turin, where transplant surgeons and anesthesiologists in Cuneo had already alerted the Liver Transplant Center.
Admitted to the Centralized Intensive Care Unit (headed by Dr. Maurizio Berardino), Martino was urgently evaluated by the transplant team, including Prof. Renato Romagnoli (Director of the Liver Transplant Center) and hepatologist Dr. Silvia Martini.
He was placed on the national super-emergency transplant list, and just 18 hours later, the National Transplant Center in Rome (led by Dr. Giuseppe Feltrin) notified the Regional Transplant Center of Piedmont (led by Dr. Federico Genzano) of the availability of a compatible donor liver from another Italian region.
Martino was taken to surgery promptly, and the transplant was successfully performed.
