Palermo, May 31 (LaPresse) – The fatal stabbing of Santo Re, a 30-year-old employee of the Quaranta pastry shop in Catania, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the return of plastic containers. According to the investigation by the Catania police, Re had just finished his shift and was heading to his car when an argument broke out in Piazza Mancini Battaglia. The confrontation occurred because a 37-year-old man from Zimbabwe, who worked as an unofficial parking attendant, refused to return some plastic trays used by the pastry shop employees to give him food as an act of kindness.

Investigators say the man reacted violently when Re asked for the containers back, stabbing him first in the arms, then in the chest and abdomen. Colleagues rushed to help Re, who was taken to Cannizzaro Hospital in critical condition. Despite doctors' efforts to save him, the internal injuries proved fatal.
