Rome, June 3 (LaPresse) – A new major blow has been dealt to the Palermo-based Cosa Nostra. The Carabinieri of the Sicilian capital have executed 29 precautionary measures issued by the Palermo judge for preliminary investigations, upon request of the Anti-Mafia District Directorate (DDA), against suspects accused of various crimes, including mafia-type criminal association, drug trafficking, extortion, illegal gambling, crimes against persons and property, and weapons offenses — all aggravated by mafia methods and intent.
Thirteen of the suspects were already in custody for other offenses. The orders come at the conclusion of investigations conducted by the Palermo DDA and the Investigative Unit of Palermo between 2023 and 2025. The probe targeted territorial branches of Cosa Nostra, specifically individuals affiliated with the Palermo Porta Nuova clan, historically one of the most powerful and dangerous in the city.
Of the 29 suspects, 16 are subject to custodial measures and 13 to residence and police reporting requirements. These individuals were not included in the February 11 operation dubbed “Grande Inverno,” which had targeted 181 people; their cases were evaluated later.
