Milan, June 24 (LaPresse) – The toll on Italian roads in the first six months is dramatic: 103 cyclists (96 men and seven women) have died following road accidents. This is revealed by the Asaps-Sapidata Cyclists Observatory, the Association of Supporters and Friends of the Highway Police founded in 1991, which is at the forefront of the Road Safety campaign. The association monitors fatal accidents involving cyclists in real time. Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna hold the unfortunate record. Just in the last week, nine deaths were recorded, five of which occurred in Emilia-Romagna. The most recent happened on Saturday, June 21 in Piacenza, where a 66-year-old man, Sergio Motti, was hit and killed by a car a few dozen kilometers from the city. According to the Asaps report, forty-nine of the cyclists killed were over 65 years old. Ten of the total deaths were caused by hit-and-run drivers. The comparison with 2024 is harsh: in the first five months of 2025 there were 85 victims, compared to 68 last year. This is a 25% increase. The sad record for Lombardy is confirmed, where 25 deaths have already been registered in the first half of the year, followed by Emilia-Romagna with 21 and Veneto with 11.
