Rome, 4 July (LaPresse) – ‘The impact of this explosion was terrible, causing damage and injuries, but without the tragic consequences that its size and power could have caused.’ This was stated by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, when he met with reporters shortly after visiting the Prenestino neighbourhood, where a powerful explosion occurred this morning. ‘It would appear that during the refuelling of the distributor by a tanker truck,’ said Gualtieri, "there was a gas leak, and the fire brigade was called, who arrived together with the police. Before they arrived, a fire broke out from the gas leak, which was seen by local police officers, who immediately alerted the control centre, which sent a team. The fire brigade, state police and local police arrived at the same time, before the explosion, and had the quick reflexes to evacuate the people present immediately. The local police went to the summer camp, where the operators immediately began to send away the children who were in the swimming pool, while the fire brigade and local police evacuated the people on the other side."The mayor of the capital also stressed that “Arpa has already begun monitoring air quality” and that Rome City Council “is setting up an advanced post to support operations”.
