Milan, July 30 (LaPresse) – Two children dead and one person missing is the toll from the capsizing of a boat during a rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea, according to Sea Watch. "On Monday, our Seabird plane spotted a boat in distress with over 90 people on board that had been at sea for three days. Two people were in the water. We immediately called for help. Frontex arrived 6 hours later, saw the vessel, and left," says Sea Watch. "When the nearby merchant ship Port Fukuka tried to assist, the boat capsized. Everyone on board fell into the sea. Once rescued, two children were found dead and one person missing," adds the NGO. According to Sea Watch, "yesterday morning, people were still left to their fate at sea. European rescue ships could have reached them in about 3 hours but chose not to intervene." Today, "the people are still on the merchant ship, and Italian authorities are doing everything to prevent them from reaching Italy. There is an imminent danger that the so-called Libyan coast guard will kidnap them and take them to Libya: towards torture and death. This is unacceptable. Our fast rescue ship Aurora could have intervened to rescue these people. It is only four and a half hours away but is blocked by Italian authorities in the port of Lampedusa for unfounded reasons." According to the NGO, "this shameful 'show' is not yet over, but Italian and European authorities have not intervened. It is a system doing exactly what it was designed to do: let people drown at the borders of Europe. Silently, systematically."
