Milan, 12 August (LaPresse) – "I find it shameful to speculate on the death of a person in such terrible circumstances, especially by senior government officials. We are close to the family of the woman who died. There is no doubt that the families of the young people involved must be held accountable for what happened. We will demand the utmost intransigence on this matter." These were the words of Milan's mayor, Beppe Sala, in a statement regarding the comments made by Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini following the death of Cecilia De Astis, who was hit and killed by a car in Milan carrying four children aged between 11 and 13 from a Roma camp.As for the presence of Roma settlements and how to deal with them, the coordination committee with the police is at the Prefecture, a branch of the Ministry of the Interior. The Municipality of Milan began years ago and is still pursuing a policy of overcoming Roma camps: the centre-left councils have closed 24 – 4 authorised and 20 irregular – in 12 years, from 2013 to 2024. The centre-right councils, which are now complaining, were only in power for one year. Ignoring this information for publicity purposes is making a mockery of the citizens,' concluded the mayor.
