Olbia, 57-year-old man dies after being hit with a taser: two police officers under investigation

Olbia, Aug. 18 (LaPresse) – The two Carabinieri officers who intervened on Saturday night in Olbia, where a 57-year-old man, Gianpaolo Demartis, died of cardiac arrest in an ambulance after being struck with a Taser, are formally under investigation for manslaughter. The investigation, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Tempio Pausania, led to the patrol leader and the officer who actually used the electric shock weapon being placed under investigation. The investigators described the measure as a necessary step, linked to the start of the investigation and the need to proceed with an autopsy.Demartis, originally from Bultei and living between Sassari and Olbia, had been reported by several citizens as wandering around in a highly agitated state, causing panic among passers-by. A carabiniere who intervened in the meantime was also struck and injured. The military intervention ended with the arrest using a taser. A few minutes later, the man fell ill and died on the way to the hospital in an ambulance. The investigation is now focusing on two fronts: clarifying whether the use of the taser played a decisive role in the death, considering that the man was reportedly suffering from heart disease, and reconstructing in detail the Carabinieri's operation to ascertain any responsibility.
