Rome, August 20 (LaPresse) – Panic broke out this morning at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, where a man first smashed a check-in counter with a hammer in Terminal 1 and then set the structure on fire. The building quickly filled with black smoke, forcing travelers to flee the area in a hurry.
Videos circulating online show the visibly agitated man being subdued and restrained by law enforcement and airport staff. Firefighters stationed at the airport quickly intervened to extinguish the flames at check-in area 13 of Terminal 1. Due to the presence of smoke, evacuation of the terminal was necessary.
The affected area was promptly reached and secured by one of the airport fire brigade teams. No injuries were reported among passengers, airport staff, or rescue personnel. Airport operations continued without major disruption to air traffic.
Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the dynamics of the incident.
