Milan, 20 August (LaPresse) – Regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, ‘Meloni's proposal for a mechanism based on Article 5 is now gaining ground. It is one of the possible solutions and is not incompatible with that of the Willing. Both can be implemented.’ This is what Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said in an interview with the daily newspaper La Repubblica. Article 5, Crosetto explains, "is a security commitment that nations would undertake. Meloni's idea, which was also discussed yesterday, is that NATO – as a defensive alliance – could ensure the protection of an external country such as Ukraine. Alternatively, individual nations could commit to doing so. The best mechanism will be chosen. Certainly, with NATO, greater deterrence would be guaranteed'. Responding to criticism of this mechanism from the Coalition of the Willing, Crosetto emphasised: “I have been saying for months: let's see the conditions of the truce. One of these, if the Russians accept Article 5, could be that there are no troops from other countries, especially European countries, in Ukraine”.
