Olbia, autopsy on man who died after taser use: "Cardiac arrest" – but further tests needed

Olbia, August 21 (LaPresse) – According to preliminary autopsy results conducted today at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Sassari, the death of Gianpaolo Demartis — the 57-year-old originally from Bultei and living between Sassari and Olbia — is believed to be linked to cardiac arrest. Demartis died in an ambulance on the evening of Saturday, August 16, after being subdued with a taser by the Carabinieri while in a highly agitated state in the Santa Mariedda neighborhood of Olbia.

However, further tests are needed to precisely determine the cause of death. The autopsy reportedly confirmed the presence of pre-existing heart conditions. The Tempio Pausania Prosecutor’s Office has opened a manslaughter investigation. Two Carabinieri officers from the Olbia operations unit are currently listed as suspects: the team leader, who was injured in the face during the intervention, and the officer who deployed the electric device.
