Pioltello massacre: judges rule that RFI is not at fault, safety policy was correct

Milan, 25 August. (LaPresse) – The Pioltello train massacre is “exclusively attributable to the breakage” of a worn joint that had been “promptly detected by maintenance operators” and no “shortcomings” in the “safety management policy” of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian Railway Network) have been proven. This was the ruling of the Court of Milan in its judgment of 25 February 2025, which acquitted all former RFI managers, including former CEO Maurizio Gentile, former production director Umberto Lebruto (now CEO of FS Sistemi Urbani) and former head of the Provincial Territorial Directorate (DTP), Vincenzo Macello – for the railway disaster of 25 January 2018: at 6.56 a.m., the Trenord 10452 Cremona-Milan Porta Garibaldi regional train derailed shortly after Pioltello Limito station, killing Ida Milanesi, Giuseppina Pirri and Pierangela Tadini, injuring over 100 people and causing damage in excess of €6.2 million. The only person sentenced to five years and three months in prison for railway disaster, multiple manslaughter and negligent injury was maintenance technician Marco Albanesi, 60, head of the Brescia “Lav 1” unit.
