Milan urban planning inquiry, Nordio: "Arrested and released, not a good image for justice"

Cernobbio (Como), Sept. 7 (LaPresse) – "The seven people arrested in Milan during the latest investigation were detained by order of the investigating judge, at the request of the public prosecutor, and released by the court of review. They would not have been arrested if my reform had been in effect, because pre-trial detention would have been ordered by a collegial tribunal. You see, now everything is paralyzed as a result of these investigations. These inquiries are necessary, but having people arrested and then released after 10 days does not look good for the image of justice," said the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio. "We have introduced extraordinary protections for citizens – especially regarding freedom. With the reform we have made, pre-trial detention is no longer entrusted to a single judge, but to a tribunal of three people. The law is not yet in force due to a shortage of judges, but it will take effect next year," the Minister concluded.
