Rome, 27 November. (LaPresse) – ‘I am delighted to begin the apostolic journeys of my pontificate in your country, since this land is inextricably linked to the origins of Christianity and today calls the children of Abraham and all humanity to a fraternity that recognises and appreciates differences.’ These were the words of Pope Leo XIV in his speech in Ankara before the authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was present. The Holy Father emphasised that ‘our world has centuries of conflict behind it, and around us it is still destabilised by ambitions and decisions that trample on justice and peace. However, in the face of the challenges that confront us,’ he added, ‘being a people with a great past is both a gift and a responsibility.’
