Rome, Dec. 30 (LaPresse) – “I strongly believe that schools should help young people mature, make them autonomous, responsible citizens, and develop their critical thinking. This is the constitutional school, the democratic school, whereas the school of totalitarianism is one-sided, indoctrinating, where only one truth exists. The government cannot accept that on politically sensitive and socially debated issues, only one truth is presented and promoted. That is why we sent inspectors to certain schools, also to verify if statements were made that could even constitute potential criminal offenses.”
This is what Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditara said in an interview with Il Tempo, responding to a question about debates organized in schools in which Francesca Albanese participated. “This is not censorship at all,” Valditara assured. “We do not contest the schools’ right to address certain topics, even presenting positions that do not align with this government’s stance. What we ask is that, first of all, the speakers are always balanced and respectful of the law. And also that space is given to multiple opinions, ensuring pluralism.”
