Madrid (Spain), Jan. 12 (LaPresse) – The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado, during a private audience held today at the Vatican with Pope Leo XIV, asked the Pontiff to intercede for the release of more than one thousand political prisoners and for the rapid advancement of the transition to democracy in Venezuela. Machado’s organization, Comando Con Venezuela, announced this in a statement. “Today I received the blessing and the honor of meeting His Holiness and expressing our gratitude for his interest in what is happening in our country. I also conveyed to him the strength of the Venezuelan people, who remain steadfast and in prayer for the freedom of Venezuela, and I asked him to intercede for all Venezuelans who are abducted and missing,” Machado said. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate also underscored the importance of the Venezuelans’ vote on July 28, 2024, which “ratifies the legitimacy” of President Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
