Askatasuna, the demonstration turns into urban guerrilla warfare

Turin, 31 January (LaPresse) – Today's demonstration in Turin in defence of the Askatasuna social centre turned into a full-blown urban guerrilla war. Protesters also threw firecrackers at the police and set fire to an armoured police vehicle. The 118 emergency services reported injuries among both police and protesters. “Delinquents: the only people worse than them are those who defend them,” commented Salvini. The president of the Piedmont Region, Cirio, called them “organised gangs of violent individuals who have laid siege to the city”. A RAI crew from the programme Far West was also attacked, ‘while stones were thrown and their equipment destroyed’, as RAI itself pointed out in a statement. ‘Criminal behaviour that has put people's safety at risk and caused serious damage. I express my full and total solidarity with the police,’ said the mayor of the Piedmontese capital, Stefano Lo Russo. “These are violent attacks aimed at the state and those who represent it. The government has done its part by strengthening the tools to combat impunity. Now it is essential that the judiciary also does its part,” said Prime Minister Meloni.
