Milan, 2 February (LaPresse) – ‘The aims and methods of that march have a clear subversive and, therefore, potentially terrorist motive, which must be addressed with appropriate measures.’ This was stated by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi during an interview with La Stampa, referring to the incidents that took place in Turin during the demonstration in support of the Askatasuna social centre. ‘The effectiveness of the security measures,’ he said, ‘is evidenced by the identification of about 800 people, including more than 50 foreigners, in the hours leading up to the demonstration.’ According to Piantedosi, if the new security package currently under discussion had already been approved, the situation would have been different. “Probably yes: preventive screening could have been strengthened by the possibility of police detention for at least 12 hours, a measure that we have included in the regulations to be approved. It is aimed precisely at preventively blocking individuals whose intentions and attitudes are already known”. He says. Some see it as an excessive measure, worthy of a police state. “Something similar already exists in some European legal systems without anyone crying out that it is an attack on democracy,” he says. Meloni appeals to the judiciary not to let everything end in a stalemate, as in the past. ‘To achieve results, we obviously need the cooperation of a judicial system that finally recognises that in such circumstances, it is not a free expression of thought that is being practised, but organised attempts to subvert the democratic order, bringing devastation to our cities,’ Piantedosi reiterates.
