Illegal hiring, Glovo: ‘No obligation to hire 40,000 riders’

Milan, 20 February (LaPresse) – For Glovo, ‘it is important to clarify’ that ‘neither the Court nor the Public Prosecutor's Office’ in Milan ‘ordered the hiring of 40,000 riders, contrary to what has been inaccurately reported by some media outlets’. The Spanish food delivery giant made this known in a statement commenting on the decision of Milan magistrate Roberto Crepaldi to accept the request of Milan public prosecutor Paolo Storari to order judicial control for illegal hiring. In the indictment, the Public Prosecutor's Office contests the ‘conditions of exploitation’ and the taking advantage of ‘the state of need of workers’ operating in ‘the Milan and national territory’ and estimated ‘at approximately 2,000 and 40,000 workers, respectively’, while in Thursday's ruling, the investigating magistrate entrusted the judicial administrator, accountant Andrea Adriano Romanò, with the task of proceeding with the “regularisation of workers” who, at the time of the start of the investigation, were “working” also to prevent “violations from recurring”, to carry out “checks” on “working conditions and regulations” which, if violated, represent an “indication of exploitation” and to “take appropriate measures”, including those other than those “proposed” by the company, to prevent the recurrence of illegal hiring practices involving delivery riders. Glovo ‘takes note’ of this decision, according to the statement, and undertakes ‘to provide the ongoing investigation with all relevant facts and data’ to demonstrate that ‘riders receive fair compensation that fully complies with all legal requirements’.
