Rome, 7 April (LaPresse) – The hearing at the Court of Cassation concerning Alessandro Impagnatiello, who has already been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his partner Giulia Tramontano, who was seven months pregnant, is scheduled for tomorrow. The incident dates back to 27 May 2023, when the woman was killed with dozens of stab wounds inside their shared home in Senago, in the Milan area. The former barman had his life sentence upheld at the appeal stage, albeit with the aggravating circumstance of premeditation excluded. This latter element, not initially recognised by the investigating judge Angela Minerva, had instead been considered at first instance alongside other factors, including the nature of their relationship and the particular cruelty of the act. It is precisely the issue of premeditation that will be at the centre of the Supreme Court’s examination, as it is called upon to rule on the appeal. The defendant, who confessed to the crime, is alleged by the prosecution to have planned the murder over a long period, even going so far as to administer poisonous substances to his partner without her knowledge, having carried out online research as early as the end of 2022. The Court of Appeal took a different view, arguing that the man intended to terminate the pregnancy, which he saw as a problem, but without any initial intention to kill the woman. The appeal court judges also rejected the defence’s request – made by lawyer Giulia Gerardini – to consider restorative justice, finding that the defendant had not yet “developed a genuine critical awareness of the reasons and impulses underlying the act, nor embarked on a genuine process of taking responsibility and personal reflection”.
