Regeni case: the family’s lawyer says, “The Egyptian witnesses’ fears were genuine”

Rome, 4 June (LaPresse) – Alessandra Ballerini, the lawyer representing Giulio Regeni’s family, also opposed the application, pointing out that “there is no evidence to suggest that the Egyptian state has changed its approach”; on the contrary, Cairo has continued to obstruct the proceedings “by refusing to serve witness summonses”. The lawyer also highlighted the difference between the defendants’ position and that of certain witnesses, such as “Zeta” and “Oda”, who had openly expressed their fears. “Their fears were real,” said Ballerini, noting that one of the witnesses had reportedly been arrested and tortured following a warrant signed by one of the defendants. The Court reserved its decision, whilst confirming the trial schedule and setting 15 June as the deadline for any further submission of documents.
