Milan: sexist chat among ATM drivers; company says “internal investigation launched”

Milan, 15 June (LaPresse) – ATM has reacted strongly to allegations, made via social media, regarding the existence of a chat group in which drivers employed by the Milanese transport company allegedly used footage from security cameras to comment on female passengers on board vehicles. In a statement, the company clarified that it had “already launched an internal investigation on Sunday” .‘Regarding the incident reported by a passenger concerning the misuse of on-board camera footage by certain employees,’ ATM ‘promptly took action with the utmost care to shed full light on the incident, to verify the correct use of company resources, and to protect customers and the thousands of honest employees who work every day to serve the city,’ the company stated in a press release. "We firmly believe in respect as a fundamental and non-negotiable value. We will take action in all appropriate forums regarding any irregularities committed," the statement concludes. The case was brought to the media’s attention by activist and writer Carlotta Vagnoli, who says she received on Saturday some screenshots of Instagram stories posted by a passenger who had witnessed a scene on Saturday morning on tram 15. The passenger – as Vagnoli recounts – reportedly saw on the phone of an ATM driver, who was wearing his uniform and sitting next to her, probably on a break, a chat containing “frames from footage of the surveillance cameras installed on every tram and used to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers” which “depicted women” ‘were accompanied by sexist comments and obscene phrases’.
