Rome, 18 Mar. (LaPresse) – ‘Not on the agenda’ of the European Council meeting ‘is the issue of tariffs and relations with the US, but it is an issue to be strongly considered. The US has decided to reactivate duties with the EU that had been suspended in 2021, and has announced that it wants to introduce others. The EU has already responded with countermeasures, and the first ones will kick in on 1 April, but the picture is complex, and we must work to avert a trade war that would benefit no one; it is not wise to fall into a vicious circle of retaliation that benefits no one. We cannot think in terms of a logic of duties and counter-duties, we must not rely on instinct but on logic'. This was said by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, during her communications in the Senate ahead of the European Council.
