Rome, 3 Apr. (LaPresse) – ‘We have learnt that, during the debate on the conversion into law of the decree on elections, an amendment was proposed that, if approved, would eliminate the run-off for the election of mayors in municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants if one or more candidates obtain at least 40% of the votes. We recall previous attempts to overturn the law on the direct election of mayors. As has happened in the past, once again the proposal is being made without consulting the municipalities, unlike what happens for other measures, in the spirit of institutional collaboration. We hope that there will be a rethink on this proposal, as it would interfere with a system that is currently the best electoral system in our country and which has so far worked to the benefit of citizens’. This was stated by the president of ANCI and mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi.
