Milan, 29 April (LaPresse) – ‘What we have had since the beginning of the Russian aggression: standing by Ukraine, which without Western support would not have been able to defend its freedom. We now support Trump's efforts and are pleased that Zelensky has said he is open to an unconditional ceasefire, demonstrating that Ukraine also wants peace. Now it is Russia that must demonstrate the same thing.’ So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in an interview with Corriere della Sera. ‘Because the three-day truce announced by Putin for the anniversary of victory in World War II is something different, and definitely insufficient. Peace must be just and lasting. This means, above all, solid security guarantees. Italy has long made its proposal: we need a solution inspired by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, even outside the NATO Treaty,’ she added. When asked if there was agreement within the majority on this front, the prime minister replied: ‘Of course, we agree, as the votes show. Then everyone uses different emphases, which is natural. But I have never had any real problems in this area. And I believe that the government is moving in a more than satisfactory manner, with everyone interpreting their role to the best of their ability’.
