Turkey, Fratoianni: ‘Meloni with Erdogan forgot to talk about human rights’

Milan, 30 April (LaPresse) – ‘It seems that Meloni pretended to forget about it in order to maintain economic and diplomatic relations with Turkey. She did not put conditions on the respect of human rights that are the basis of democracy. She forgot that for years in Turkish prisons there have been thousands of opponents of that regime, starting with Kurdish parliamentarians'. This is what Nicola Fratoianni, one of the two leaders of Avs, said in an interview with the daily newspaper La Repubblica, commenting on the Italy-Turkey intergovernmental summit held yesterday in Rome and at which the prime minister Giorgia Meloni ‘in front of Erdogan pretended nothing’ about the oppositions' request to speak with the Turkish president about human rights. Fratoianni, now travelling to the West Bank, added: ‘What is happening here is impressive. I address Meloni but also the Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani. We are not just talking about Gaza, where there are now 60,000 dead. Here the Palestinians live under apartheid. Hebron should be under absolute Palestinian control and instead there are neighbourhoods entirely occupied by settlers and here Palestinians cannot even drive cars'.
