Rome, 17 May (LaPresse) – "Thirty-five years ago, the World Health Organisation decided to remove homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, thus ending a senseless classification and marking the beginning of a cultural and social change towards equal dignity for all citizens. However, the latest data from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights remind us that there is still a long way to go in the fight against discrimination. Too many people are still victims of bullying because of their sexual orientation, of violence, often perpetrated in the silence of their own homes, living in fear of being themselves." This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. “Combating all forms of marginalisation,” he added, 'is a duty enshrined in the Constitution and reinforced by Italy's international commitments. It is a principle that must be lived in everyday life, a common heritage that requires the active, conscious and responsible involvement of everyone. The theme of today's Day, the power of communities, recalls the value of living together with respect. An inclusive community knows that it must protect differences in order to build a more just and cohesive society, thus expanding the freedom of all."
