Rome, May 26 (LaPresse) – The centre-left has taken Genova from the right (after ten years), retained Ravenna, and won Assisi in the first round, while Taranto and Matera will be decided in a runoff. In both of these cities, the progressive coalition is ahead but suffers from internal divisions, with the Five Star Movement (M5S) having chosen its own candidates. Still, Elly Schlein and her allies are celebrating. The Democratic Party leader, after the results, called Silvia Salis, the new mayor of Genova, and Alessandro Barattoni, who succeeds fellow Democrat Michele De Pascale in Ravenna. She then attacked the right: “It’s now clear: the right cheers for polls, we win elections.” Matteo Renzi was quick to echo this, writing on social media after the first exit polls: “The local elections show that when the centre-left is united and has credible candidates, it wins. Pretty much everywhere,” sharing a photo of Salis at the Leopolda event. In Genova, Salis's winning ‘XXL’ coalition also included Azione. Schlein highlighted that the Democratic Party was the top party in the largest cities.
