Milan, June 1st. (LaPresse) – "I express my appreciation and esteem to the Prefects and, through them, to those who work for the common good, along with my best wishes for their work, hoping that the June 2nd celebrations will be a moment of unity and concord around the values of the Republic." This was declared by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message to the Prefects of Italy on the occasion of the Republic Day on June 2nd. "With the referendum of June 2, 1946, the free vote of the Italian people for the Republic – with the participation of women for the first time – crowned the Liberation struggle against Nazism and Fascism, the 80th anniversary of which we commemorate this year, and was the premise of the Constitution. That pact between the people and institutions, founded on the principles of freedom, democracy, and solidarity, inspired by the centrality of human dignity and labor, succeeded in creating, with the contribution of plural positions and cultures, a synthesis of shared values and in starting the reconstruction and social and economic revival of Italy," added Mattarella. "The national community is grateful for the balanced work that, together with other institutional actors, you carry out in preventing and combating all forms of crime and violence, ensuring the peaceful exercise of citizens' freedoms."
