The Hague (Netherlands), June 24 (LaPresse) – “A few days ago, I launched an appeal that we have circulated throughout Europe and internationally to say that there is an alternative solution to the only one currently being offered by our governments—both within the European Union with the €800 billion rearmament plan, and within NATO with the proposal currently under discussion to increase military spending up to 5% of each NATO member state's GDP. We believe this proposal is, in fact, a political, economic, and social suicide,” said Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, ahead of the "No Rearm, No War" event in The Hague, organized in parallel with the NATO summit.
“Above all, because it does not reflect the priorities of our citizens and it does not meet a real security need,” he stressed. “We must restore centrality to politics—politics with its diplomacy, its vision, its solutions, and its strategies,” the Five Star leader added. “It’s encouraging to start this dialogue now—around fifteen leaders from different parties and political movements have responded,” he reported.
