Rome, August 13 (LaPresse) – "Regarding the surreal and scandalous statement by the INGV president Fabio Florindo – in office since March 27, 2025 – I remind that there is a principle of administrative continuity of acts, valid unless specifically revoked by the Board of Directors. The former INGV president, Prof. Carlo Doglioni, has already clarified in official venues the inadequacy of the seismic studies on the Bridge, noting that the project PGA (0.58 g) is severely underestimated compared to possible values in the Strait, which can easily exceed 1 g and reach up to 1.5–2 g, well beyond those recorded in the earthquakes of L’Aquila (0.66 g) and Amatrice and Norcia (0.95 g)," said Angelo Bonelli, deputy of AVS and co-spokesperson of Europa Verde, who continued:

"To deny that the Strait of Messina is a potential epicentral area, in light of historical seismicity – such as the 1908 earthquake – and instrumental data, is to deny scientific evidence. Florindo claims it is inaccurate to say that the Calabrian side pillar rests on an active fault: false. The official ISPRA-ITHACA catalog lists a fault about 20 meters from the foundations of the S. Trada pillar, marked in the project drawings as 'certain and active.' No one has ever requested to update the catalog or modify the project, and the hazard of a fault in a seismic zone is known to any structural engineer.

It is a fact that the current INGV president signed a 250,000-euro agreement with the Stretto di Messina company. Who are the scientific contacts for this agreement? Were there consultancy reports, such as that of Dr. Valensise? Given the serious discrepancies with former president Doglioni’s positions, I consider it necessary to inform the judicial authority. Instead of dismissing the alarm as unfounded, Florindo should acknowledge that the risks raised by engineers, seismologists, and geologists are founded, documented, and well-known. Building a pillar on an active fault is not alarmism: it is madness and irresponsibility."
