Rome, 22 October (LaPresse) – ‘I have accepted the invitation from the leaders of Fratelli d'Italia: I will head the list for the Campania Regional Council.’ This was announced by Gennaro Sangiuliano in an interview with Corriere della Sera. ‘I would like to resume a dialogue with my fellow citizens. I am Neapolitan, born in the historic centre, in the San Lorenzo district. I went to school here, attended university here and obtained my doctorate in law with a great professor: Sandro Staiano, notoriously left-wing, but of great value,’ he added. The former minister explained that ‘the idea began to take shape last spring’. ‘I discussed it with people who are particularly close friends of mine: Giovanni Donzelli, Ignazio La Russa and Arianna Meloni. I also discussed it with the centre-right candidate for governor, Edmondo Cirielli, whom I hold in high esteem,’ he said. As for the likely criticism of his new entry into the political arena, the journalist, currently a RAI correspondent in Paris, pointed out that he had already defended himself ‘by citing Article 51 of the Constitution: participation in political life is a democratic right’. ‘There have been many colleagues at Rai who have been involved in politics: Badaloni, Marrazzo, Giulietti, Ravaglioli, Andreotti's son-in-law. All valuable people. Perhaps because I am right-wing, I should not have this right? But I don't want to argue: there are laws, and they apply,’ he added. Finally, a comment on his relationship with Giorgia Meloni. ‘There is no coldness. The prime minister is so busy: we don't have a daily relationship, but now that I have made my decision, she said to me: “Good luck, do things properly”,’ he said. ‘I enjoy sending Giorgia the front pages of the major French newspapers that talk about her,’ he concluded, ‘she is also enjoying extraordinary prominence across the Alps.’
