Milan, 24 October (LaPresse) – "Italy's commitment to the United Nations is the cornerstone of our country's foreign policy, in accordance with Article 11 of the Constitution. Believing and investing in the United Nations means acting to transform the principle of international solidarity and a world order based on respect for rules into concrete actions. It means promoting a logic of collaboration and respect among states, as an alternative to that of oppression. These convictions appear all the more well-founded and decisive today in the face of pressing global challenges and the alarming spread of armed conflicts." This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 80th United Nations Day. ‘The 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations allows us to reaffirm Italy's firm support for multilateralism, of which the UN, an international organisation with a universal vocation, is the fundamental pillar,’ Mattarella remarked. ‘Eighty years after its entry into force, it is essential to emphasise the core values of the United Nations Charter – articulated in the three pillars of peace, development and the protection of human rights – and to reaffirm the duty to promote them day after day, in support of the dignity of every people and every person.’
