Nassiriya, Meloni: ‘Let us not forget the sacrifice of those who serve the state’

"Today, 12 November, is the Day of Remembrance for military and civilian personnel who have fallen in international peacekeeping missions. Twenty-two years ago, in Nassiriya, a truck loaded with explosives forced its way through the checkpoint at the entrance to the Maestrale base, headquarters of the Italian Carabinieri MSU, killing 28 people, including 19 of our compatriots, among them civilians, military personnel and Carabinieri. On this day, I would like to once again thank all those who work in international peace missions, putting their own safety at risk to defend our values and the security of us all." This was written on X by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. “Just like those servants of the state who gave their lives for Italy in Nassiriya and fulfilled their duty to the end. Sons of our homeland who left with courage, carrying with them the values of peace, honour and service. To all of them and their families, we offer our heartfelt and grateful thoughts, today and forever. We will never forget their sacrifice”.
