Rome, 13 November (LaPresse) – ‘The Italian government is wrong not to introduce a minimum wage, both at a social and economic level. The Commission points to improvements at European level with some exceptions, including Italy, where real wages have been falling for 10 years and continue to fall.’ This was stated by former European Commissioner for Employment Nicolas Schmit at the presentation of Italianieuropei magazine at the Chamber of Deputies. Participants included PD secretary Elly Schlein, CGIL secretary Maurizio Landini, foundation president Massimo D'Alema, and PD deputy Maria Cecilia Guerra. In his speech, the Commissioner cited the example of Spain: ‘The increase in the minimum wage has contributed to higher productivity and growth in Spain.’ Schmit then linked the issue of low wages in Italy to that of youth emigration.
